What exactly is a Solutions Architect?

The definition of a Solutions Architect is a person responsible for evaluating the business needs of an organisation and then determining how Information Technology is able to best support those needs.

In addition to aligning the business goals with an Information Technology strategy, a Solutions Architect should also act as the bridge between the business and Information Technology operations. This is to ensure that all stakeholders share the same vision when developing and implementing the technological solutions for the agreed upon business problems.

Specifically a Solutions Architect should focus on:

  • Identifying the correct technology platform / stack / framework for the solution
  • How Information Technology is able to be used in order to solve a specific business problem or need
  • How the proposed solution will interact with any other modules or services
  • Risk understanding and mitigation in any third party platforms or frameworks
